The band Underoath is a group that was originally based out of Tampa, Florida. This was where their alternative sound and musical style was first created back in 1998. The group has been described as being rock, punkrock, and Christian metalcore. With a deft and engaging swiftness, the members all blended their sounds into a rocking metal band that seemed to deliver a little bit of every music genre.
This uniquely different band is often referred to by a shortened version of their name, "Oath". Fans and critics alike have all noted that this is an unusual band because they rarely seem to stick to any one musical niche. Instead, they seem to have a noted preference for delivering a heavy metal styled release only to go back to the studio and then deliver a thrash album or delve all the way into a more melodic version of a pop metal band.
The original members were vocalist Dallas Taylor, keyboard player Chris Dudley, Aaron Gillespie on drums and Tim McTague on guitar. Their first signing deal was with the Takehold music label and occurred just one year after the band had begun playing as a solid group. Their first 1999 release was the "Act of Depression" CD that only sold 2000 copies. Their second release fared only slightly better with 3000 copies being sold.
Then in 2002, the group was moved to the Tooth and Nail/Solid State label that was based in Seattle. By 2003 the group included Grant Brandell on the bass and James Smith who also played guitar.
The band went on the 2003 Warped Tour and Underoath merch was highly sought by fans who proudly wore tees and hats with the name of their favorite group. This was also when Dallas Taylor made his exit and was replaced by Spencer Chamberlanin who had formerly been with the "This Runs Through" musical group.
Even though some fans had their doubts about where the group was heading with their music this release was enormously popular when it debuted in 2004. This was actually the album that made many of the most loyal fans wonder if the band had suddenly lost their way along the paths of music greatness. The Underoath Band members took a short break during 2005 but returned in 2006 to claim their space by releasing "Define the Great Line". This album became the highest ranking Christian album on the Billboard charts since 1997. In 2008 when the group released "Lost in the Sounds of Separation" it was clearly evident that they had yet again brought a darker, edgier sound back to their music. What the future holds for this group and their musical style remains to be seen.
